A linguist's eye for your research.
Academic proofreading and copy-editing for PhD candidates and journal article writers – with a deep understanding of what it means to write in English as an additional language (EAL).
Who I Am
I am a linguist, a former university academic, and a lifelong English language educator. I hold a PhD in Linguistics from Macquarie University, where my doctoral research examined multilingualism, language identity, and the lived experience of young people navigating English-dominant institutions and societies – the very pressures many of my clients face today.
Over a career spanning four decades, I have taught English in Italy, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, the UAE, and the UK, and have also managed language programmes for a language foundation in Indonesia and at university level in the UAE and New Zealand. That breadth of international experience means I bring both professional rigour and genuine cultural sensitivity to every document I work on.
I know what it means to write complex academic ideas in a language that is not your first language – and I know how to help your voice come through with clarity and confidence.
What I Do
I specialise in proofreading and copy-editing PhD theses and journal articles written by multilingual scholars. Most of my clients are based in Australia, though I am also able to work with authors and doctoral candidates all over in the world. My work covers grammar, syntax, punctuation, sentence clarity, consistency of register, and adherence to academic conventions – everything that helps your research speak for itself.
I have proofread theses and dissertations across applied linguistics, education, arts, and psychology, including theses by publication. I work carefully within the ethical guidelines that govern copy-editing and proofreading support for doctoral candidates.
Why Work With Me
My background as an IELTS examiner, a university composition lecturer, and a published researcher in sociolinguistics gives me an unusually complete picture of academic English: what examiners look for, how arguments are structured, and how language shapes the impression your work makes. I have also authored, co-authored and reviewed work published in international peer-reviewed journals, so I understand the high standards your work must attain.
Most importantly, I have spent my career working alongside, and in support of, multilingual learners. I approach every thesis with respect for the intellectual work it represents – my role is to refine the presentation, never to alter your ideas or your voice.
Based in New Zealand, Working Globally
I am New Zealand-based and work entirely online. My clients are primarily PhD candidates at Australian universities, though I am also happy to work with students and academic faculty at universities anywhere in the world. Turnaround times and pricing are discussed individually, based on the length and complexity of your document. I am happy to answer any questions before you commit.
